Pinky Tesfay is an abstract painter who delves into the realms of the subconscious landscape and language. Utilizing oil bars and acrylic as her primary mediums, she employs painting as a means to articulate the inner forces that reside within her.
Born in Saudi Arabia in 1985 to Eritrean parents, Tesfay embarked on a transformative journey at the age of five when she immigrated to London with her mother and four siblings in 1990. Faced with the challenge of not speaking English, she found herself immersed in linguistic isolation, shaping her perception of the world into a sensory experience. This sense of displacement and outsiderhood became a catalyst for her artistic exploration. Commencing with early drawings, art evolved into a mode of expression through which she could visually communicate her thoughts and emotions.
Tesfay's expansive canvases beckon the viewer into a profound engagement with her art. The bold, gestural marks on her paintings reveal the artist's emotions and movements during the creative process, offering a glimpse into her expressive world. Her distinctive style exudes power and confidence, providing a fresh perspective on the role of painting as a bold statement about her driven and vicarious personality.
In 2009, Tesfay pursued a degree in Fine Art at London Metropolitan University. Her artistic muse is a tapestry woven from diverse influences, with the cosmos and nature exerting profound roles in shaping her creative vision. Through her work, she delves into unseen realms, navigating the intricate interplay of personal and collective histories to craft a rich visual narrative.
